Discover how Caliber's AI Narrative feature in Online RMS helps patrol officers cut report writing time by up to 40 percent while maintaining accountability. The Heavy Burden of Report Writing

For patrol officers, writing reports is one of the most time-consuming tasks of any shift. After securing a scene, interviewing witnesses, and collecting evidence, officers are often stuck behind a screen typing detailed narratives. It is a necessary part of the job, but it pulls personnel away from helping in their communities.

A Practical Plan for Faster Reports

To solve this problem, Caliber Public Safety has introduced the AI Narrative Draft Assistant within Online RMS. This feature is designed to reduce the administrative burden on patrol officers. Instead of starting from scratch, the system uses the data you have already entered into the incident report, including persons, offenses, and property, to generate a structured working draft.

During our pilot phase across 34 agencies, users reported saving 20 to 40 percent of their time on narrative creation.

Built for Strict Accountability

We know that artificial intelligence cannot replace human judgment. That is why Caliber built this feature with a strict human-in-the-loop model. The technology assists the officer, but the final accountability always remains with the author.

The AI-generated draft includes embedded placeholders that require the officer to actively review, edit, and complete the narrative. Officers cannot submit an unedited draft. The system requires each user to formally acknowledge the use of AI assistance and sign off on the accuracy of the final report.

As Bill Chapman, RMS Senior Analyst at Caliber, explains, “Every report still has an officer’s name on it, and that means every report still needs an officer’s eyes and judgment on it.”

Enhanced Review and CJIS-Aligned Security

Supervisors also benefit from this update. A new toggle feature allows supervisors to view the original submission side-by-side with the annotated version. This makes the review and approval process faster and easier to track.

Because security is critical, the AI Narrative workflow operates within our highly secure infrastructure. Caliber products are hosted at Nlets data centers, which meet stringent FBI CJIS policies. Officers maintain complete control over the data, ensuring sensitive information is handled correctly before the report is saved to the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does AI police report writing work?

AI police report writing tools, such as Caliber’s AI Narrative Draft Assistant, securely analyze structured data from Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems, Records Management Systems (RMS), and integrated body-worn cameras (like Abel Police). The AI automatically extracts key facts, timelines, and entities to draft a preliminary incident narrative. The law enforcement officer then reviews, edits, and approves the draft, keeping the human in the loop while significantly reducing administrative time.

  • Is AI-generated police reporting NIBRS compliant?

Yes. When paired with a modern, NIBRS-compliant Records Management System, AI-generated police reporting ensures that all required data fields, codes, and classifications meet the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) standards. The AI assists in drafting the narrative context, while the underlying Caliber RMS validates the structured data for strict federal compliance.

  • How does body cam footage integrate with AI report writing?

Through secure integrations like Abel Police, the AI system processes the audio transcripts and metadata from body-worn cameras. It uses this digital evidence to generate an accurate, unbiased draft narrative that reflects exactly what was recorded, ensuring the written report aligns perfectly with the video evidence before the officer finalizes it.
