July 2026 Golden Headset Award Winner – Sarah Nelson
“It is with great pride that I nominate Sarah Nelson for the Golden Headset Award. While there are many outstanding dispatchers who answer the call every day, Sarah represents the very best of what this profession stands for: compassion, resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. As a 911 dispatcher, Sarah spends every shift helping people through some of the most frightening, painful, and life-changing moments they will ever experience. She is often the calm voice on the other end of the line when someone is scared, injured, grieving, or in danger. What makes Sarah exceptional is that she never treats callers as just another phone call. She listens. She cares. She makes people feel heard, valued, and safe, even when their world is falling apart. Sarah consistently goes above and beyond what is expected of her. She works overtime without complaint when the center needs support. She steps up when others need help. She willingly sacrifices her own time and energy to ensure her team and her community are taken care of. Her work ethic is remarkable, but what truly sets her apart is the heart she brings to every call. One of the most powerful examples of Sarah’s character came during one of the most devastating moments of her life. On the day her father passed away, Sarah still reported to work. While carrying unimaginable grief, she continued serving others, helping strangers through their emergencies while facing her own personal tragedy. Most people would understandably be unable to continue. Sarah did. Not because she had to, but because helping others is woven into who she is. That strength has never come at the expense of compassion. Despite the difficult calls, long hours, and emotional toll of the profession, Sarah continues to approach every caller with patience, empathy, and kindness. She understands that for many people, the voice they hear during an emergency will stay with them forever. She treats that responsibility with the seriousness and humanity it deserves. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sarah leaves a lasting impact on everyone around her. She is the kind of person people naturally trust. Whether it is a caller in crisis, a coworker having a difficult day, or a friend needing support, Sarah has a unique ability to make others feel safe. In a profession built on helping people during their worst moments, that gift is invaluable. The Golden Headset Award should recognize more than technical excellence. It should honor the individuals who embody the spirit of public service and demonstrate extraordinary dedication to both their profession and their community. Sarah Nelson exemplifies those qualities every single day. She has shown that even in the face of personal loss, she will continue to serve. She has shown that leadership is not about recognition, but about consistently being there when others need you most. She has shown that compassion and strength can coexist. For her unwavering commitment to her callers, her dedication to her team, her extraordinary resilience, and the profound impact she has on the lives of those around her, I can think of no one more deserving of the Golden Headset Award than Sarah Nelson. Sarah is more than a dispatcher. She is a lifeline, a source of comfort, and a reminder of the difference one person can make.”
