Yvonne Henson History ArticleFor many public safety professionals, service becomes part of who they are. The desire to help others, solve problems, and support communities often extends far beyond a single role or agency. At Caliber Public Safety, many team members bring that service mindset with them from years spent in the field, creating a direct connection between the software we provide and the people who rely on it every day.

Yvonne Henson, Director of Customer Success at Caliber Public Safety, is one of those professionals. Her career spans records management, emergency communications, public safety leadership, and now customer success. Throughout every stage of that journey, one thing has remained constant: a commitment to helping people when they need it most.

From Typewriters to Technology

Yvonne’s public safety career began more than twenty years ago with Greenville County, South Carolina. Long before modern reporting systems became commonplace, she worked in records management, manually typing police reports into computer systems and coding them for submission to the state. She handled records requests, managed microfilm archives, prepared photo lineups, and assisted with evidence and property documentation.

As technology evolved, so did her career.

After several years in records, Yvonne transitioned into the communications center, beginning as a dispatcher. What started as a frontline position quickly became a long-term career path. Over approximately fifteen years, she progressed from dispatcher to training officer, shift supervisor, and ultimately manager of the communications center. The center provided EMS dispatch services across approximately 785 square miles and handled nearly 200,000 phone calls annually. At the time, Greenville County EMS was the busiest EMS agency in South Carolina, dispatching roughly 78,000 EMS calls each year while also supporting 15 out of 33 fire departments in the county.

“I started as a dispatcher, then a training officer, then a shift supervisor, and then I ran the center,” Yvonne recalled.

Along the way, she developed a deep understanding of Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems, mapping technologies, radio communications, and the operational realities that dispatchers face every day.

Learning What Public Safety Needs from Technology

One of the defining experiences of Yvonne’s career came while helping rebuild her agency’s CAD environment.

Greenville County operated within a unique structure involving seven separate Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). Working collaboratively across agencies, Yvonne helped evaluate and redesign systems to improve interoperability and support how dispatchers actually work. That experience gave her a firsthand understanding of both the strengths and limitations of public safety technology. More importantly, it taught her how critical it is for software to support operations instead of forcing agencies to adapt around technology.

As both a dispatcher and a communications leader, she learned what users truly need from a CAD system: reliability, simplicity, and tools that help people make decisions during high-stress situations.

Those lessons continue to influence her work today.

A Full-Circle Journey to Caliber

Like many public safety leaders, Yvonne regularly attended industry conferences. At those events, she met numerous vendors, but one company consistently stood out.

She remembers meeting Caliber team members years before she ever considered joining the organization. Their professionalism, authenticity, and willingness to build genuine relationships left a lasting impression.

“They were just the nicest people,” she said.

Years later, as she considered the next chapter of her career, those memories resurfaced.

Rather than supporting a single agency, she wanted an opportunity to help public safety organizations on a larger scale.

“I wanted to help not just our center, but others. I wanted the opportunity to help hundreds of agencies across the country solve challenges and improve their operations.”

That decision eventually led her to Caliber Public Safety.

Today, more than five years later, she serves as Director of Support for Caliber Public Safety, overseeing support operations for CAD, Mobile, RMS, and Cushing product lines. She leads a 12-person support organization responsible for customer support, operational guidance, and escalation management, while facilitating customer advisory board initiatives. For Yvonne, joining Caliber felt like a full-circle moment. The vendor she once admired from conference floors had become the team she now calls home.

Bridging the Gap Between Operations and Technology

One of Yvonne’s greatest strengths is her ability to translate between the operational world of public safety and the technical world of software. She understands what it feels like when a communications center depends on technology during a major incident. She understands the challenges agencies face when migrating to a new CAD system.

And she understands that customers are often balancing operational concerns, technical requirements, staffing challenges, and organizational change all at once. That experience allows her to serve as a bridge between customers and technical teams.

“I feel like that perspective allows me to bridge the gap between operational needs, technical needs, and customer expectations.”

Whether she’s helping a customer navigate a software transition, assisting sales teams during demonstrations, or working with internal staff to solve a problem, Yvonne often finds herself translating different perspectives into a common language. She knows how public safety technology should function and how it should support the people using it.

That perspective helps ensure customer needs remain at the center of every conversation.

Supporting First Responders from a Different Seat

Although her daily responsibilities look different today, Yvonne’s mission remains unchanged. Whether she was dispatching emergency calls, managing a communications center, or leading customer success initiatives, the goal has always been the same.

“Help people when they need it the most.”

That philosophy continues to guide her leadership style and her approach to serving customers. It also reflects the broader culture she values at Caliber: a culture built on relationships, service, and a genuine desire to support the agencies that serve our communities. Throughout her career, Yvonne has learned that the best solutions come from strong partnerships, open communication, and never losing sight of the people behind the technology.

Because at the end of the day, every report, every call, every dispatch, and every software enhancement ultimately supports first responders and the communities they protect.

And for Yvonne Henson, that mission has never changed.
